We will see if this carries through the rest of the series, but this series which doesn't list Beauty and the Beast as an inspiration or source, might just be one of the best Beauty and the Beast type tales I've read in a while. That includes on some of the structural levels and quite a few of the themes. Love it.

This series isn't based on fairy tales, but getting back to reading this after reading Wolfgang's translation of Villeneuve's Beauty and the Beast has me seeing that tale in this one even more so than in the first book.
