You think your pain is the only emotion you will ever feel.

Finally, Avery can't stand it. The look. Then a knowing smile. Then another look.
"What?" he asks.
This only makes Ryan smile more. "I'm sorry," he says. "I don't usually like people. So when I do, part of me is really amused and the other part refuses to believe it's happening."

It is hard to stop seeing your son as a son and to start seeing him as a human being.

"You need to love him. I don't care who you thought he was, or who you want him to be, you need to love him exactly as he is because he is your son, and he is a remarkable human being. You have to understand that."

Avery looks at the river, looks at Ryan on the other side of the boat.
"The world from here isn't that bad, though," he says. "This right now is a world I can live in."
This is what the right people can do. They can make you see that better world.

Every time two boys kiss, it opens up the world a little bit more. Your world. The world we left. The world we left you.
This is the power of a kiss:
It does not have the power to kill you. But it has the power to bring you to life.

People like to say being gay isn't like skin colour, isn't anything physical. They tell us we always have the option of hiding.
But if that's true, why do they always find us?

You spend so much time, so much effort, trying to hold yourself together.
And then everything falls apart anyway.

Waking is hard, and waking is glorious. We watch as you stir, then as you stumble out of your beds. We know that gratitude is the last thing on your mind. But you should be grateful.
You've made it to another day.
