Characters continue to be fascinating and often convey their feelings physically. The author does "show don't tell" well with his characterization. Physical description remains vivid, and both William and now Edith come across as relatable. There is an impersonal coldness in much of the author's dialogue. Many conversations are delightfully awkward.

The author has an elegant blend of imagery and feeling. Physical description carries emotion with it. Stoner's listless opening and realization of consciousness upon discovering a passion is relatable. The author also conveys the way characters feel and think through physical description, much like the stories' locations. Eager to continue Stoner's story.
