Stoner comes from humble working class beginnings, his parents push him to go to college instead of staying home and just becoming a farmer. He went to college to study agriculture but his professor noticed his interest in English and reassured him what his future was going to be, a professor himself. Stoner just told his parents he’s continuing his education instead of returning home with them.
