So far, I'm trying really hard to empathize with the protagonist. It's hard, because he did something horrible, he isn't dealing with it in a way that shows he truly understands the gravity of what he did, and I get the feeling that the author wants me to empathize with him.

There is way too much dialogue, and most of it isn't necessary for the development of the characters or story. Ref for review: pgs 102 & 119
