It’s ironic that here, Sir Gawain’s symbol is the Pentangle, which is said to represent eternity (in a similar way that circles and loops do) given that Gawain is the one who ends his own life through his actions in Malory. He isn’t an eternal loop, but an Ouroboros, determined to destroy himself and set forth events that end the Round Table through his desire to challenge the near invincible Launcelot.
