On 'dissociation': it's a natural anesthetic, a way to be in the trauma without feeling it. Controversially, it may be one of the root causes of learning disabilities in children and the catch-all experience of adhd in adults.
Interestingly too, he says dissociation may be why many traumatised children (and adults) have a hollow, faraway look to their eyes; before trauma, the eyes don't seem to record what it sees.
