Are they on the road? Or perhaps working or living outdoors? I wouldn't say this is a common American meal, or certainly not in a modern sense. But, not knowing the text and so not knowing their circumstances, my uninformed guess would be that it's a food that doesn't need to be kept cold in order to be preserved for longer stretches of time? So they can carry them with them wherever they go and they last a long time.

Oh, you now, looking at the synopsis I see that it's set during the Great Depression. So I would guess that another factor is that it's because they don't require expensive ingredients to make. Many Americans were living in😀absolutely desperate poverty at that time.
Yes, it's definitely some sort of bread or pastry that's been already cooked and keeps for a while. I read Of Mice and Men when it was assigned at age... 12? Or thereabouts. I remember absolutely nothing about it lol. How are you liking this one? I will read Steinbeck sooner or later! I just haven't tended to be especially interested in American novelists, nor in post-WWII novels (primarily for aesthetic reasons on both counts, I suppose).
It is decent to me. Americans might love it more- it's there history afterall. Despite that I see several flaws.
I'll be looking forward to your review! I have a copy of Of Mice and Men, so I'll reread that one sometime soon. It's very short. And since everyone is reading and singing the praises of East of Eden, I'll read that, too, soonish, to see what the fuss is about. But I don't have any of his other works. My mom may have The Grapes of Wrath, in which case I'll borrow it from her own day.
