“It was,” he nods. He places a foot on the first step, inching closer. “I’m no longer the Don of the Italian Mafia. I renounced it.”

“He calls you Leni,” he whispers. My throat is suddenly tight, my breaths shallow. I nod. “And you let him,” he adds, as if that’s the truly shocking part.

“So why don’t you explain to me why a man you’re not supposed to have ever even met is ready to fucking die for you?”

LOL. YIKES.

“Was that not clear? When I said I’ll have her, I meant in every way. I’m going to take real pleasure in ripping your name off her, Thiago,” I growl. “Forget you ever thought of her as Valentina da Silva. She’s Valentina Leone from now on.”

“What are you willing to risk for her? Think long and hard before you respond, because if the answer isn’t absolutely everything, then you won’t win against me. I only have everything to lose here and that’s Valentina.”

“I won’t just wage it, Thiago. I’ll fucking win. You’ll die for nothing, because I’ll pry your sister from your cold dead hands and take her anyway.”

“Don’t confuse my lack of reputation for lack of will. If you won’t agree to my terms, then I will raze you and your men to the ground and I will be merciless,” I declare.

“I dare you to try and give her to another man. I'll spill as much blood and leave as many bodies in my wake as it takes to get her back in my arms. I won't stop until she's mine.”

“Then why didn’t you tell him there’s someone else?”

“Because there is no one else.”

Matteo’s hand flies to my throat with enough force to make me stumble backwards. He follows, a dark look of primitive rage unfurling in his eyes.
“Be very fucking careful, Valentina,” he warns,

“We’re done,” I announce, although the words nearly kill me. “The fun is officially over.”

A bone-chilling laugh leaves him, one so devoid of humor it echoes with pure madness alone. He smiles coldly, his teeth bared and sharp. “That decision is not yours to make.”
