Kuang made me wait until I’ve read 50% of this book to sympathize with Alice and Peter. She’s still a damn genius. Before chapters 20-24, I thought these two were arrogant and delusional scholars. How ridiculous of them to go to Hell just to bring back their dead advisor! And then I kept reading and then I kept feeling for them and then I now understand their why.

I hate Alice Law. Although she rants about her love for academia and her love for being the best in the field, the motives behind these feelings are so shallow. So egotistical, so narcissistic, that I can’t even take her seriously. She’s a ridiculous woman who will put others down so she can rise to the top and delude herself that it was all worth it.
