anaya + i also have a great number of epubs saved on my pc, so i'd like something where i can easily use those too.

Sandra I have a kindle, mostly because I can use Kindle Unlimited with it and read all my gay porn. Thats about it - also because I can't get my hands on english porn in Germany easly. The printed versions are way to expensive for just a fast read. It has negatives - you support amazon with it (for some thats the biggest negative), also Amazon can delete ebooks from it, because of random reasons or change the version of the ebook. I never had it, and I only saw that in America (I'm from Germany, so no idea how that works.) Also all bought amazon ebooks are ONLY readable on the kindle. You can't download it on your pc or save it otherwise offline. The kindle can read epubs and you can put them on the kindle via usb cable or you can use amazons "Send to kindle" program, so the kindle downloads it via wlan. (Tho i would think amazon knows what you send over to the kindle, let's be honest, like google it def. gonna use that data for advertisment).

If the epubs are having a DRM via Adobe (or I think Adobe stopped this year and other companies took over) then you can't use a kindle, because it doesn't has any intern authorization program to use a DRM-provider. You need to break the DRM via a third-party-program and then send it to your kindle.

I think Kobo has a DRM-provider or there is a way to use DRM-protected epubs on it. But i don't really know, I'm honest.

Lakshmi 🌸 I’m also looking for good e-readers and after some research I’m opting for KOBO libra color white. I don’t know when will I buy but right now this is my option. It supports epub files because I also have so many ePub saved on my hard disks. If you decide something do let me know please! 🌷💕

thank you for such a detailed response!! it's a lot of information to process, but it's really helpful. the problem is the choice is very limited for me since amazon india has only three options: kobo libra colour, b&w and kindle paper white, so i'll have to choose wisely. from all the videos i've watched, they've done nothing but confuse me even more. oh, and my epubs are mostly ftls, so i don't think there's any drm for that.

honestly, it's all soooo confusing, but amazon india only has 3 options: kobo libra colour, b&w and kindle paper white, so ultimately i'd have to choose one of them. imo, the libra colour looks best, but i'm cofused between black and white colour, they both are gorgeous. sighhhh, ultimately, though, i want one that's durable and compatible with my epubs.

i also don't know when i'll buy it. maybe around christmas? it'll be a perfect gift to myself.

Monique When I was buying my kindle I didn't put much research into it. I decided for the one with good price and good ratings - and that was kindle paperwhite at that time. I have nothing to compare it to others but it does its job nicely, it that helps 😄

message 7: by Stacie (new)

Stacie I love my Kobo Libra color a little bit more but honestly for epubs, Paperwhite and Kobo are both great. I do prefer my Kobo though

1) you can highlight, underline, and take notes with a stylus (that can be a negative too if you don’t like that). Also, I like you can do it in different colors but that’s not necessarily functional for me- just pretty 🫣

2) you can journal on there in the notebook section which I love

3) Using Google Drive is very easy to transfer books and organize

4) Library access is easy (in the US)

5) It has buttons (not everyone likes that) which also makes it a little bit wider so keep that in mind. Both are super comfortable to hold though.

I do think the Paperwhite feels more durable but that’s could just be in my head. You will love either one! They each also have little things that are awesome- Kindle you can pin a map for easy access while you’re reading, Kobo you can adjust the brightness just by sliding your finger up and down on the page, etc.

Paula | Scales and Books My 4 years old Kobo Clara HD is the best thing I've ever invested my money in truly! Still works perfectly like the first day and it's really easy to transfer epubs!

I have friends that have Kindle and they aren't really happy with it but I don't have a personal experience.

I hope it helps!!

message 9: by trice (new)

trice i have a kindle paperwhite, and it's pretty good in terms of battery and text customization; the problem is that it doesn't support epub if it's downloaded directly from the kindle's web browser, and idk why but i sometimes get errors when sending to kindle on my phone 😔

message 10: by NiaKantorka (new)

NiaKantorka I have a tablet (iPad) and use the kindle app and Ibooks app to read on it. I had used a kindle and a kobo reader in the past, both are okay, but you’re limited to either epubs or mobi (similar files to kindle’s azw files). It’s a huge hassle to get one transferred into the other, tbh. But of course a tablet costs more than an e-reader. But maybe you’re already using one already and I’m sure there are other epub reading apps for android or other tablets.

thanks for the suggestion, but the problem is that my eyesight isn't good, and i don't think i can handle any more blue light, so i'm actively looking for something with an e-ink display.

message 16: by Sandra (new)

Sandra If you want a ebook reader mainly for using your own epubs, than i would probably suggest using Kobo and not Kindle. I think Kobo works better with ebook management systems like Calibre - especially for FTLs, where you want to add a cover, author names and so on, you can doo that all in Calibre. I never used my kindle with it, i think, buut i bet amazon tried to make the kindle as uncombatible with other programs as possible (i love mine,, but lets be honest here). Maybe take a look on YT about Kobos customization, especially for the font size and style and how bright and warm you can change the ink display, if you have bad eyesight.

Nel kobo all the way

message 19: by Katie❄️ (new)

Katie❄️ I always end up going with a Fire tablet instead of a kindle. Just so I can read web novel's on a browser. Then, I have the kindle ap and audible ap too. So usually always some type of tablet instead of an ereader because I want it all.

message 20: by iayal (new)

iayal there's definitely a huge price difference than getting a kobo/kindle but, i just got an ipad because you could use it for other things (for my case, it helps with uni) but, it's really nice to read on 😭

which version of ipad? i always go for samsung because apple is too expensive. even the most basic ipad starts at around 600$

message 24: by ✨ gabi ✨ (new)

✨ gabi ✨ maybe a different opinion, but if you have the money for it, i think a tablet is a better investment. i bought an ipad many many many years ago to read my university material but i've used it so much all these years it basically paid itself. ipad had apple books in it, which allows you to read a multitude of book formats, but most other brands have something similar. tbh if i were to buy it today, i'd go with samsung probably; cheaper and more functional. also, the screen being the size of a normal book is very pleasing to me as well. not sure if i was any help, since i don't own a proper e-reader, but maybe this is something to consider! good luck in your purchase!!

Nel tablets are not good for the eyes compared to e-readers thou. esp if u spend hours reading.

message 27: by George (new)

George Taylor I also use a tablet. But I use it on high contrast and on the settings for nighttime for better time on my vision.

Phylicia ☾♡ I hope you don’t mind me adding my thoughts! ^^

The BOOX Palma is actually my go-to e-reader because I love the phone-sized form factor, but I also have a Kobo Libra Colour and a 6-inch Kobo Clara BW, and I’ve been really happy with both. I do have a Kindle too, but I much prefer Kobo’s customization and settings. I mostly use my Libra Colour for manga/webtoons and my Clara BW for regular books since I prefer the crispness of B&W e-ink for text.

I use Calibre to organize and transfer my EPUBs, and I also use a site that lets me send files directly to my Kobo without connecting it to my PC (GR doesn’t let me share links, rip 😭).

I’ve tried reading on tablets too, but they strain my eyes quite a bit, even after adjusting the display settings. That’s just my experience with sensory issues, though! I also have an NXTPAPER, which I find much more comfortable, so that might be worth considering if you’re looking at tablets, depending on your preferences and budget.

Good luck with choosing! ^^

Rosa I read on a tablet because I also read manga in it, so that's more convenient for me. But if I had to get an ereader I'd go for Kobo because you only own licenses in Kindle and I like to own the books I pay for.

⚡eli⚡ I have super old Kindle Paperwhite that still works. I'll be honest - when I bought it sooo many years ago, I did not do any research. Price was good and that's it. Now, knowing more about Zon and its practices, I don't want to support. But, I have sooo many books in it, that I can't just stop using it :/ Especially that I have invested enough money and books can only be read there. Anyways, I have heard enough of good things about Kobo. If I had to buy a new e-reader, I would probably buy it nad not Kindle. Good luck on your choice :)
