my eyes widen and my chest flushes—and he arches a single, amused brow.

The voice comes from above me. I look up to find Selwyn staring down at his former mentor, fangs flashing in a grin, with both hands in his pockets.

Sel’s eyes trail over my face, my cheeks, my brow. “Why fight now, when you are as glorious as I remember? As powerful? More, even. I would rather enjoy simply... perceiving you.”

Nick’s blade hand is steady. “Selwyn—”
Sel’s eyes flick to Nick. “Your hair is too long.”
Nick fires back, “No time to get it cut.”
“The stubble?” Sel asks. “Really?”
“It’s been a long few months.”
“You have no idea.”

My heart stutters still in my chest. Then begins again—faster.

Selwyn ambles toward us, whistling, in a long dark coat. Glowing green
aether writhes around his hands and arms where they sway loose at his sides.

“My mercy, Erebus,” I say. “My mercy.”
