Maugham meets Larry in a bar and he is pleased to see him and they agree to meet up the following night.

In the end everyone got what they wanted. Larry the life his way, Sophie Macdonald death to finish her misery, Suzanne Rouvier got respectability for her and her daughter, Isabel the cozy wealthy American life and Gray the job he craved. Elliott ended his amazing life blessed by a bishop.

Maugham accuses Isabel of killing Sophie Mcdonald by leaving the drink out when they were supposed to meet up for the wedding dress fitting. She admits to it eventually and is distressed to find out she will likely not see Larry again.

Maugham visit Isabel in Paris on his way back to London. They are moving to America on the back of their inheritance from Uncle Elliott. Gray is buying into a business there.

The inspector of cause believed them innocent of any wrong doing and after identifying the bloated corpse they were on their way. Larry had given up his allowance and was to work his passage to America.

Maugham is asked to go to the police station in Toulon to identify the body of Sophie Mcdonald who had been murdered and chucked into the harbour. As she had a photo of Larry on her he too was asked to attend.

Larry tells of his visit to the Yogi recommended by his friend. Sri Ganesha takes him in and Larry experience enlightenment amongst the mountains as he drops the importance of self. He intends to go back to America and live that way and hope it influences others.

Larry then goes to Paris before moving to a sleepy French village with the assumed Suzanne Rouvier. Next he went to Seville to stay with a painter who had once kept her and met a young girl who looked after him in every way. she had an illigitimate child by a soldier and amicably went back to him when he returned from service. Larry then went to India.

Maugham bumps into Larry in Paris. He tells of his encounters with mystics and Yogis and how his marriage to Isabel would never have worked. He tells of his meeting father Einshelm in Bonn Germany and how he had followed him to a monastery in
Alsace where he realised religion wasn't for him.
