Neal Shusterman is the kind of misogynist who creates complex female characters, but every moment of betrayal is tied to them. Men, OTOH, are the savior figures; the ones who are pure of motive.

Oy. The problem with some of these [mustache twisty villian] books is that there's a real cynicism to them.

Problem with kids' books: villains are a little too mustache twirly.

There's s/thing lovely & refreshing about seeing The Economist presented as a villain.

Having just [finally] bothered to check, it seems that Neal Shusterman is classified as a children's and YA novelist. This vibes like a 'grown-up' novel and I wonder if the many folks who dislike it, dislike it b/c they are kids expecting a bunch of kids in the main cast.
