Pretty early on my feel of Kafka is that The Trial is born out of the paranoia of feeling disassociated from your fellow human beings. Josef has no knowledge of why he ought to be arrested and maintains his own innocence, understanding that acknowledging or entertaining his potential guilt is the key to guilt settling upon him. The worst thing we see him up to is his Indiscretions in courting Fraulein Burstner.

It is like an allegory on a certain mindset. I feel like The Trial is a metaphor for self-scrutiny. We don’t know what Josef is stood accused of, and from what I know he never finds out, but it starts with a feeling of paranoia that people are scrutinizing you—like the folks watching Josef’s arrest from across the way—and then imagining motives that you cannot explicitly know unless you are shown or told otherwise. At this point, depending on temperament, you can either explode or implode.
