PROTAGONIST: Famous restaurateur, Keith, discusses his life as he is experiencing a massive stroke. He is an anxious person in some aspects. "I spent half my days worrying about my finances...the force of specialists and assistants to keep me afloat was staggeringly expensive" (p.121) The stroke prevented him from working which is worrisome on his finances because he supports his family.

SETTING: The novel is mostly set in current day London; however the author flashes back to earlier adventures of his life. Currently, he has gone back to 1970s and is traveling through Istanbul. "Istanbul's Pudding Shop was the most famous hippie cafe in Europe...I stayed for a week...spending every night at the Pudding Shop" (p.58). At age 19, Keith is soaking in every opportunity on his pilgrimage trip to India.
