This book is such a compelling read. Makes one scared and angry at the same time. Scared by how fascism is enabling AI to rapaciously consume our resources and poison us with its waste. Anger at the billionaire tech bros who have no regard for how their actions impact our living planet. They are knowingly destroying people’s lives and they just don’t give a s**t.

This chapter reads like a SF dystopian novel in which the uber-rich hijack the government in order to siphon fund to their project of building a world-dominating AI while also building their escape pod in case the whole experiment goes sideways. No wonder William Gibson is delaying the publication of the third volume in his Jackpot trilogy - reality has caught up to his SF.

Excellent start. Klein & Taylor sketch their outline. They will consider the three pillars of current end-time fascism, religious, tech-bros, & ethno-nationalists, and then explain how to resist these through a politics of “hereness”. Hereness in the sense of wanting to stay on earth with our neighbours rather than being spirited away to heaven, Mars, or gated enclaves.
