Fascinating book, covers really interesting aspects of Soviet life that seldom feature in more mainstream works. However, the academese really slows the pace down. He mentions "deterritoralization" every few pages and it's fucking exhausting. No I haven't read Deleuze and I probably won't

Excellent book but a bit heavy on the academese. There's lots of talk of Zizek, Lacan, and post structuralism and I'm not sure it's necessary. I'm by no means allergic to Theory, but I think it sometimes obfuscates rather than elucidates here. Either way a really intriguing book that has gained a lot of influence thanks to Adam Curtis' documentaries, worth your time.
