I think a good symbol would be a gravestone because the main character bod can not leave the graveyard because the outside world isn't safe for him.

the story takes place in a house were a murder comes into a house to kill a family, the baby managed to crawl out of the house in into a nearby graveyard were he was raised by ghosts.
