I don’t think this book is cracking anything open. The primary characters are slightly flawed, but flawed the way a giant gold statue is flawed by a slight dust. The majority of the characters are sort of mythical, larger than life, Good with a capital g: good-at-heart. A few are not, and these characters are also barely dealt with, more like sketches than anything the narrator actually has to deal with.
