Only 200 pages after reading this for a week - the pages are massive and the text is small, so I’m in deeper than the numbers show. It’s fantastic so far, very focused in comparison to most of Vollmann’s work and full of some of the best characters he’s written. Very dark ideas in here, not an easy read at certain points.

Actually haven’t been looking forward to this one since it seems like such familiar territory for Vollmann. But I’m hoping to be proven wrong, and I’m sure I will be.
