Throughout the novel, Melissa de la Cruz, explains that Jasmines visa is expired and she feels sick to her stomach. The author states that Jasmine is a hardworking and confident girl who wants to succeed in life. She wants to feel like a citizen in her country and not stuck in despair. Jasmine states that, "Everything I knew, everything I had achieved...It was built on the foundation of the sand" (De la Cruz 182).

The novel Something in Between is full of intense, love, and compassion. I have really enjoyed reading this book because the main characters are in high school which is easy to relate to. “Even though you can't control the things that happen to you, you can control your perspective and your actions. There's never a moment you can't choose who you want to be" (15). This quote highlights powerful individuality.
