Jean Louise questions her beliefs and who she looks up to. When she learns that Atticus is affiliated with segregationists, she realizes she can't rely on others' moral compasses, and she is motivated to set her own "watchman" or judgment. Her viewpoint shifts as she acknowledges, "...her father's presence at that table with a man who spewed filth from his mouth--did that make it less filthy? No. It condoned" (Lee).
