Brett starts noticing his mom acting strange. “My mom was acting strange this morning…” (Light 98). This causes Brett to question his family. Becca forms feelings for Brett, even though they’re relationship is fake. Although Becca likes Brett she doesn’t want to get hurt. “I reminded myself that feelings, …, were dangerous” (Light 119). Becca fears liking Brett because she might get hurt.

In the novel, The Upside of Falling by Alex Light, the main character Brett starts to express how much he cares about Becca. Even though they're gonna be in a fake relationship he wants to really get to know her better. For example Brett states, “Do you want to hangout tomorrow?” (Light 66). Brett shows that he wants to spend time with Becca outside of their fake relation and get to know her as a real person.
