Switched to the audiobook and we're cooking now. Bronson Pinchot is crazy good as both characters, making the dialogue work and doing accents in a way that makes the characters less wooden and strange. Something about Highsmith's prose and dialogue especially just doesn't click with me, but hearing it as opposed to reading it is much easier and smoother.
