Okay, the accent in my head while reading this sounds exactly like Laura Ramoso’s “German Mom.” 😂 So much very German-style pessimism.

I may have to read this novel if only to have more Ramoso in my day.

Maybe it’s just me but I can seriously hear her. I’ll let you know if that changes. I’m not even half way through yet.
*smart-ass whispering* (Haushofer was Austrian though; also, there is so much good comedy about Germans, and as a German with a German mom, I have no idea WTF her skits are all about - it's not recognizable to actual Germans)

My father-in-law is Austrian, and he’s actually the most loving, least critical person ever. 😂 So maybe the “German Mom” thing is really just HER (the comedian's) German mom. LOL. It is funny though.
But while reading Killing Stella, I can still hear that voice—the bluntness, the pessimism, that slightly severe way of looking at everything. Except the book itself isn’t funny at all. It’s dark.
I know nothing about this book or Haushofer, but her Goodreads bio is one of the strangest and entertaining I've ever read.

and that photo looks like it was taken when she was in her mid- to late- 20s. Tanna - you may have singlehandedly resurrected this forgotten author for a slew of us and I thank you.

Hahaha, I also checked the bio - I think part of the confusion is an error in the translation, because "Gymnasium" in German is not a gymnasium in English; rather, it's a type of school. So Haushofer went to Catholic (private) school, but as the Nazis were opposed to religion, they turned it into a public school. The bio makes it sounds like she was casually playing volleyball with nuns, and suddenly found herself in a public Nazi school! :-) .-) :-)

Book-related rabbit holes are the best place to spend one's time. Says the woman who should be working ....
