Shivnaz Bharadwaj’s Reviews > H.P. Lovecraft: The Complete Fiction > Status Update

The Rats in the Walls was exceedingly gothic! Lovecraft truly brought to life the setting of his protagonist’s eventual doom to such a wonderful degree, that I found myself so vividly imagining the very room in which the psychic manifestation of the eponymous rats first occurred. Yet, I find myself left with a bit of a sour taste in my mouth over the narrative’s portrayal of pagan cult, a shame.

After reading The Lurking Fear, I can confidently state that Lovecraft’s longer works are much more enjoyable. Although, I find it hilarious just how much he was terrified by notions of degenerated, devolved ape-like humans. This seems to be a recurring trope in several of his stories.

Reanimator might be the best of Lovecraft’s stories I have read thus far in this collection, which has been a mixed bag of sorts. The next goal for the book club is to finish The Call of Cthulhu (pgs. 355-379), I hope to approach it by the end of the week.
