Continued - Few people are enlightened, most are falling leaves. Even those who have been in the presence of perceived perfection (Gotoma - The Illustrious One) are unable to become stars. True enlightenment cannot be outsourced through doctrine alone, the followers who mimic the teachings like the 1000s of monks prove this. Siddhartha eludes that wisdom is found through personal experience and internal discovery.

Still unsure of the page but start of chapter 9 - The Ferryman. Siddhartha had lose himself in years of folly and foolishness to find himself again, he became too arrogant as a result of his knowledge and he lived an empty futile life. This helped him realise his arrogance and allowed himself to be born again. Siddhartha did commit suicide that night but it was the old despairing Siddhartha that died in the river.

I forgot which page I’m at as I’m reading online but just before the start of the Samsara chapter. Siddhartha mentions “Most people, Kamala, are like a falling leaf that drifts and turns in the air, flutters, and falls to the ground. But a few others are like stars which travel one defined path: no wind reaches them, they have within themselves their guide and path.“ - Continued, word limit reached.

“People are children” this quote resonated with me, not too sure why. I feel as strong sense of empathy at this point in the book. People are children. When you view people as children you forgive their shortcomings much easier and take things less personally. Everyone deserves patience and grace after all people are children.
