I lied… I’m actually just starting this afternoon. Anyway, this is very well written and engaging, and hopefully I’ll be able to finish it the next few days when I don’t have work.

Watched Rome, Open city for a class and am now really interested in reading about Italy’s fascist period. (I’ve now marked a ton of books as “currently reading,” but I’ll actually read this one. I think.)

The sentences in this book are so convoluted, and worse still is that colons are constantly used improperly. It seems to be badly translated from Italian. This is a typical sentence:She was grinning quite openly, so that there was nothing we could do but refute what she said, in chorus, and assure her that everything was fine as it was, that the court didn’t matter in the least and in any case it wasn’t at all bad, and to make up for it, we praised its surroundings, which meant the park, compared with which—it was Bruno Lattes who said it: at the very moment in which, their “fight to the death” suspended, Micol and Alberto came up to us—the other privately owned parks in town, including duke Massari’s, faded into prettified suburban backyards.
