Marion has replaced Cecelia, who seems to have replaced other bloodmaids as favorite even before that. Lisavet seems more dangerous as the book continues. Surely the old bloodmaids aren’t being hidden in the house’s passages, bc the current bloodmaids aren’t still being bled a lot & Lisavet is sickly. But what is being hidden there? It doesn’t seem like that much of a secret if the tutor knew about it.

-opinionated from the start. The vampirism was never fully acknowledged in the sense that these weren’t truly vampires. The magic or supernatural elements in this book were mild, which I don’t think is a bad thing. It’s a somewhat unique take, to spin nobility drinking blood via bloodletting as a form of superiority.

I’m glad Marion & the girls (& kitty!) escaped. I’d classify this as a drama with a horror setting, more so than a straight up horror. This was an atmosphere focused book, rather than plot driven or even character focused imo. I still liked it though, since I’m hugely into vampires, sapphic characters, & unhinged women. Crazy discovery that Lisavet is literally draining their life forces to live… immortality?

I like that Marion is a protagonist with a backbone, who voices her opinions & advocates for herself as best she can. If she didn’t, this novel would feel YA. I enjoy adult novels for the agency & outspokenness of their characters (generally speaking).

I’m enjoying the premise & atmosphere. A vampiric Cinderella story where a young woman living in poverty is selected to become fancy, regal, & prim. The “vampires” seem to not be supernatural in this story, but rather humans who feed on blood for (real?) health purposes. Real history has bloodletting to be rid of diseases; this is sort of the reverse.

Interesting premise of young women signing up to be indentured servants to vampires. When the blood maids retire with pension, are they turned into vampires themselves?
