Okay, so within the first chapter we establish that this is gonna be a gay romance and that "church man bad" (he also is a cop and he hunts so we know his morals are all twisted.)
I also had to keep checking that the author was male. I assumed this was a meme-ready piece for a "women writing men" meme.

I had heard that YA fiction was in a bad place but this book confirmed all the stereotypes. Plus just some bad writing. The opening line is "I awoke to the sound of yelling and the sight of spaceships doing battle over my bed." This banger turns to a letdown immediately; apparently this was a tv show projected onto the ceiling. If you think that's lame, wait til you see the cliffhanger ending chapter 2.
