Many people had haircuts that were short on the sides and longer on top, with bangs falling partially over their faces or tucked behind their ears. They looked so ambiguous that I wasn't sure which gender they indicated, or if they indicated gender at all.

"Your dad is less funny," Gilaf said.
"See, now that doesn't work at all," I said.
"I was trying not to overuse it," Gilaf said, "so I changed it slightly. Why are moms funnier than dads?"
"Sexism, probably," I said.
Arturo was outpacing us now, possibly to avoid Gilaf's jokes.
"Sexism is funny to you?" Gilaf asked.

Being left behind made Bob sad. It probably made those friends sad too. Bob wanted to snuggle those friends. He wanted to sing to those friends. He wanted to talk to those friends so those friends could also be safe.

The ships would not snuggle with Bob. The ships did not have minds. They did not have friends. Bob felt sorry for these ships because they could not have friends.
