Guess I'm too spoiled by two amazing Wouk novels followed by two amazing Stegner novels. This one was written thirty years before "Angle of Repose" and it may be that he was still within his "million bad words" phase. It's certainly not bad by most standards, but Stegner's a god and this one isn't up to his later standards. I'll definitely come back to it, though.
