The book isn’t sure who its audience is. It offers a good amount of basic Opera 101 information for newcomers while attempting to engage seriously with opera’s complicated issues. The balance feels off. I’m listening to the audiobook, and the author’s pontificating often seems opinion-based rather than data-driven. A more evidence-based approach might have made for a more engaging experience.
