I'm forcing myself to hold my horses because I don't know yet if it's the author's intent to write the protagonist as dislikeable as possible or has been a projection. Poverty does make one miserable, distrustful and paranoid, but it's explicitly stated that Gordon chooses to be poor as a rebellion against money and the capitalistic society, so he refuses to engage in any sort of community justifying that he's poor
