The Mayor is finally done talking, but now K. is talking to the Landlady and she’s almost as bad. Everyone here is just talking in circles and all the older people are sick. It’s like they’re all in on something and trying to run K. away.

“‘He’s not a good speaker, but he shouts, and that’s enough for many people’” (p. 77). I think we all definitely know some people like this. I also found this really funny coming from the guy who has been talking practically non-stop for the past 10 pages.

I have genuinely never seen an explanation of something so simple be made so complicated. It definitely helps develop the character of the mayor, though, who is an old man. It makes me wonder if this is just how the old man is, or if he’s trying to confuse K. on purpose.

So apparently they didn’t even need a land surveyor? K. is upset because he came all the way to this town just for them not to have any work for him. I would be too; that’s a huge waste of time and money.

“Deserted the eagle to ally herself to the slow-worm” (p. 63). I really like how this quote describes the characters. Klamm as the eagle—high and mighty—and K. as the slow-worm—the one just waiting to be eaten.

I started reading this book because a friend told me a good way to study for the SAT was to read boring books, but I’m kind of invested in it now. Why can’t he go to the castle? Will he ever be allowed to go to the castle?
