POV: It is a 3rd person limited point of view. It informs me about a character's feelings but not many other people's feelings. There is a narrator that is not in the story but understands Tom's feelings. "Tom's mind was made up now. He was gloomy and desperate."(p.112) The narrator knows he is gloomy and desperate because the text is focused on him. Everyone else's feelings are very limited and unknown.

PROTAGONIST: Tom is the protagonist. He is often mischievous, smart, and dramatic. Ben ,a little boy in town, is tricked into doing chores that Tom was meant to do as punishment. "Yes, she's awful particular about this fence...I reckon there ain't one boy in a thousand...that can do it the way it's got to be done." (p.17) Here Tom tricks Ben into thinking whitewashing the fence is a privilege and not a chore you do.
