This book explores how human society under the influence of new technologies can veer toward extremes. On Earth urbanization and population growth has reached its extreme in the caves of steel, cities that are so overbuilt that citizens never see the sky. At the opposite extreme on Solaris, an uninhabited planet to settle combined with ubiquitous robots leads to a society where people live alone on vast estates.
