The thing that gets me about fantasy books with physical tells like tattoos or branding or entwined stripes is how fashion doesnt seem to care. Like instead of it being fashionable to constantly show off that you have or dont have the magic mark... you can just cover it up.
I get it... its to let the MCs walk around being hidden to aid the plot or allow them to attend a ball. But good gravy.

Why is a rogue magic user... who is on the run from the Magic Guild AND in a very anti-mage location doing with a) a picture of her recognizable infamous siblings and b) going by the faux name Ottilie Fleet as opposed to her real name Ottilie Rushford? Like... we're told she spent 2 years on the run and yet...? Her sister uses a fake name. So like the character in universe understands how they work.

I love HM; her worlds are so juicy w/ fascinating magic and settings. But she has all these rules on how the world works and then for no reason at all the MC is aware that this is wrong and is the moral exception to these rules. The world has X and Y politics, and yet her MC's always seem to care of N. They seem like they woke up in the world a month ago as opposed to have been living in it all their life.
