This chapter felt like the opposite thing: decently slow and manageable, but also, as the narrator himself lampshades at the end, pretty entirely irrelevant to the story established so far. We didn't really need to know all of this. But it was an exciting little short story in its own right, so who am I to complain too much.

So the monk is, as I'd have expected, consumed with hubris. And then right after that he faces moral dilemmas, big revelations leading to temptations, terrible deadly poison and heroic sacrifice, all in a single chapter - in a couple days - one right after the other. Rapid-fire pacing leaves the reader no time to breathe and establishes very little that doesn't directly serve the drama at hand.

Truthfully, I have to wonder what 18th-century reader would need all these prophecies and foretellings to be able to see right from the start where things are headed. There's this air of melodrama and rising tragedy with characters who are more concepts and archetypes than three-dimensional people.
But, you know what, I can still feel it and roll with the premise.
So it's a solid enough of a start.
