Totally surprised by the opening intro frame-type text, the generally good-natured or gently ironic tone, the seriously high level of the prose. Love the generational scalloping, the uncovering of the intriguing yet powerful “A.” Somehow never read this and now seems the perfect time.

Mannoush Tuvis I'm reading this now and have been enjoying Hawthorne's longer efforts at prose. Prior to starting this, I immensely enjoyed Hawthorne's shorter tales, which I'd argue are more important for understanding earlier America's culture than people might suspect. One of my favorite writers. I really enjoy Hawthorne's prose style.

I have the stories on my night-table and will get to them next. I read The House of the Seven Gables and Young Goodman Brown at one point but hardly remember them now.

David Partikian I blew it off twice when it was assigned. Ended up reading it in my late 40's. I have now read it twice and it is one of my favorite books, especially since I live in rural New England, where the immoral NH nature of the entrenched residents is like a Hawthorne novel
