Very interesting read, in light of the cultural appropriation controversy going on in CanLit right now. Lots of problematic stuff but lots of honesty and heart from Margaret Laurence - of course! She writes about living in Ghana, pre-independence, being "that" white liberal, trying to impress the "natives" (basically being a woke bae) - I haven't got to the stuff about the Metis yet but I can't wait...

Finally getting back to this - the end of the book is shorter, lighter essays. It's so funny to think that Laurence was writing these light, kind of puffy pieces during the time that she was writing her masterpieces.

Essay on "The Mad Mullah" was very dense and took a while to get through, but, glad I read it. Hope the next few are breezier travel essays though, tbh!
