Ruth is annoying in the sense that she's too in her head about this whole Nao thing. Her husband is in the rain looking for their lost cat that he loves dearly and here she is, stuck in her head, saying all these insensitive things. She's devoid of empathy for the world outside of her mind. But, in a way, this is a very human trait and is what a lot of us do ourselves.

The book is so strangely human, like I feel like I really know these characters. I love how even the littlest things are being described. I'm not sure how to explain it other than I'm having fun reading this
