I don’t know Joni Mitchell’s biography but it feels like Dederer paints her as “difficult” a standard adjective for women who don’t fit the wife and mother stereotype, and is taking liberties about the reasons behind her choice to give up a baby for adoption. I don’t think you can say she strived for greatness to make up for it - there is no evidence presented to support this.
