I think that the main point of this at the moment is that it is better to say something than to be quiet. Eventually it will come out anyway. And also you what does staying quiet about what you think actually do anyways? It is trying to say that we have become socialised into accepting the fear of what others may think etc. instead of speaking about what we find important in our lives.

Aspen Lake about how we shield ourselves from connecting with one another by witholding what we want to say. As well as shielding ourselves from eachother in the sense that we owe it to lift up other peoples words who are screaming for them to be heard but we are too scared to engage with it. She uses the example of 'how can I teach black women's writing, when I am not one'- when our whole lives we've been reading from men like Shakespeare, and we are not one of them either. This points out the colonial and sexist critique of how we choose to highlight some words over others.

Aspen Lake Basically I feel like the whole point is to not be fearful to speak.

Aspen Lake I think it's also important to note of the African American festival of harvest she was celebrating whilst writing this- the feast of Kwanza. 7 prinicples, one for each day. 1- Umoja (unity) the decision to strive for and maintain unity in self and community. 2- Kujichagulia (self-determination) the decision to define ourselves, name ourselves, and speak for ourselves, instead of being defined and spoken for by others. 3- Ujima (collective work and responsibility) the decision to build and maintain ourselves and our communities together and to recognise and solve our problems together. There are 4 more asp.
