This introduction which has darted across the history of Britain to briefly highlight how and where connections to Africa, slave trade and individual black peoples/Britons have been omitted or adjusted has made me excited for the rest of the book. Wars named to hide their relation to the slave trade, a black sailor on Nelson’s column and the origin of the guinea and where the gold came from to name a few.

Happy Black History Month!
I’m taking the time to learn more about the long history between the black diaspora and Britain. I hope that there’ll be some inspiring events throughout this book but I know the majority like the history of Bunce Island will be saddening. Here’s to learning from the past so as not to make the same mistakes.
