The main villain of this book is… Guinevere. Which is an interesting take, sure, except Peake also insists on Modred playing a role because… idk, it’s Arthuriana and he has to? Some interesting ideas in this one, a lot more that frustrated me. Review to come.

This book simultaneously tries to be a fantasy and convince you Merlin is simply one of Arthur’s split personalities

bookslayer★ it's really fascinating how people were capable of writing complex morality in the 13th century and now the retellings are basically the followers of Saturday morning cartoon logic and some poor sod who doesn't deserve it turns out to be "evil", patheticccc lol

Lol you just predicted part of my review. Godwin starts the novel with a preface about how the characters are more complex than we think, Guinevere isn't pure evil, Morgana has hidden depths, Modred is complex, etc. but in actual practice... it's cartoon logic again. I'll refrain from ranting further because I want to put my thoughts into an articulate review and not stream of consciousness frustration.
