Homer makes it explicit how stupid and pointless this war is from the start, the war itself is treated as analog to a petty squabble between agamemnon and achilles. and the entire skirmish rapidly devolves into a playground for gods. and yet theres so much horrid beauty in the battle. youre whipped up in each heroic speech. you learn so much about each player and then you learn how they die. tragically. for nothing.
