Meat-and-potatoes would almost be too lavish a description of Le Carre’s prose. Some better descriptions would be cold, clinical, deeply committed to its own utilitarianism, a journalistic obsession with detail and minutia, all of this with only the slightest peppering of the driest, most British sense of humor I’ve ever read. Somehow, still incredibly compelling and really hard to put down.
