“..advice is a dangerous gift, even from the wise to the wise, and all courses may run ill.”
Lots of travelling in this chapter, hills and winding roads…but finally, I’ve met the famous Elves and had this Pearl of Wisdom dropped.
Tolkien managed to make them awe-inspiring to me the reader, I didn’t realise with the crumbs of information he dropped in previous chapters and the prologue that was his plan.

Ch 1. The very definition of whimsical. This little area of the Shire that Bilbo is living in is already so fleshed out, and I love the snippets of the life and culture we’re getting there. The eccentricity of the neighbours and the history that’s spoken of and hinted at make it feel real. The gifts Bilbo gave away and his reasoning for why he gave them to who he gave them to made me chuckle. Flooded with charm!

Prologue finished. How charming the Hobbits are, I would like to be one. The world building is already incredibly dense and I’d be lying if I said I wasn’t a little overwhelmed so far.
